Sequence
The first layer marketed is the last one worth buying
Which is not a coincidence, and is the single most useful thing on this site.
| # | Layer | Why here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A private vehicle | Cheapest layer, largest effect. Nothing else on this list competes per pound. |
| 2 | Separate dining tables | Costs nothing. A question about the camp, asked before you choose it. |
| 3 | A guide for your stay | Small cost, often included, and the difference is audible by the third morning. |
| 4 | A camp with eight tents | Frequently no more expensive than one with thirty. |
| 5 | Deck dinners on request | Cheap, and it converts "separate tables" into "company when we want it". |
| 6 | A guide who travels with you | Worth it from three stops onward, or for photography. |
| 7 | A private charter | Per aircraft, so it needs four or more people to make sense. |
| 8 | Exclusive use | The most expensive, and it needs a party of six to justify itself. |
Why the order gets inverted
Not because anybody is lying. Because layers 7 and 8 are the only ones with a photograph attached and a large margin on them, and layers 1 to 3 are logistics.
You cannot photograph a vehicle that is not shared, or a guide who anticipates, or a dining room with four tables instead of one. You can photograph an empty camp at dusk, and so that is what leads the brochure.
The common expensive mistake
A private villa with a shared game drive vehicle. It happens regularly and it is the most costly way to end up with less privacy than you wanted — you have bought layer 4 and skipped layer 1, and you will spend six hours a day with strangers and the evenings alone, which is precisely backwards.
If the budget only stretches to one thing
The vehicle. Every time, without hesitation, and it is not close.
A standard tent at a good camp with your own vehicle is a more private honeymoon than a villa without one, for a fraction of the money.
