"Private" is five words pretending to be one
It appears on every camp website in the market and it means five different things, bought separately and priced very differently. Somebody who pays for a private villa and then shares a vehicle with strangers has bought the expensive layer and skipped the cheap one that mattered.

The uncomfortable question
How much privacy do you actually want?
This market never asks it. Complete isolation for fourteen nights is sold as the ideal, and it is sold hardest to honeymooners.
In practice a great many couples come home saying the best evening was the one where another couple talked for three hours about a leopard — and the guides and camp managers are frequently the most interesting people you will meet all year.
What almost everybody actually wants is privacy during the day and optional company in the evening. That combination exists at nearly every level above the entry point, and it costs a fraction of a buyout.

Buy them in this order
Note where exclusive use sits: the most expensive layer, the last one worth buying, and the first one marketed.
1. The vehicle
Cheapest layer, changes the most. If you buy nothing else on this list, buy this one.
2. The meals
Costs nothing — it is a question about how the camp is run. Ask before you choose the camp, not after.
3. The guide, for your stay
Small cost, frequently included, and by the third morning he is putting you where something is about to happen.
4. A smaller camp
Eight tents rather than sixty rooms. Often no more expensive, and it changes every evening.
5. Then the expensive layers
A guide who travels with you, a charter, exclusive use — in that order, and only if the party size justifies them.

What "private" turns out to mean
What does "private vehicle" actually mean?
It is not a standard term, which is why it is worth pinning down in writing. At some camps it means a vehicle and guide dedicated to you for the stay. At others it means you will not be joined unless the camp fills up — which is not the same thing, and is exactly the situation in which you would mind.
Ask whether it is guaranteed or best-efforts, and get the answer in the booking confirmation rather than the brochure.
Is a private villa more private than a small camp?
From other guests, yes. From everything else, not necessarily — a villa with a shared game drive vehicle is less private where it counts than a tent with its own.
That is the whole point of thinking in layers: the villa is layer four and the vehicle is layer one, and buying four without one is the most expensive way to get less than you wanted.
Do we need exclusive use?
Almost certainly not, for two people, and it is the most expensive thing we could sell you. A good small camp has six to ten tents; you will have your own vehicle and guide regardless.
It earns its cost for a party of six or more, for three generations travelling together, or for anyone who genuinely does not want to make conversation at dinner for eight nights.
Can we have privacy during the day and company in the evening?
Yes, and it is what we would suggest for most couples. A private vehicle plus a camp with separate dining tables gives you exactly that, and adding two deck dinners across a week gives you the choice night by night.
It costs a fraction of a buyout and it is the combination couples report being happiest with afterwards.
